This is day 32 of our wisconsin trip. We rolled out of the Lebanon KOA at about 10:00 AM and made the four and a half hour drive to ine of my favorite KOA’s; the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA.

This is a really small but nice KOA about nine miles off highway 69 in Oklahoma. they have nice pull through gravel sites that are level, full hookups with 50 Amp service, a large pool and shady playground. They also have a barn on the property so you will here a rooster greet the morning. You will see some other animals too.

The owners are among the friendliest you will find and they maintain the campground well.

Even though we were stopping for only one night we unhooked the trailer. This would be our last chance to have a full clean out of the black tank before we got home; so we set up the sewer connections as well.

We decided to run back to Checotah to pick up dinner. We opted for “Charlies Chicken” a fast food fried chicken joint. It was excellent, and their sides were also great.

Eva enjoyed laying in her coolaroo and watching a few dogs at a nearby cabin. We actually started to consider adding another night to our stay but knew Eva was ready to be home. She needs more exercise like running the yard and swimming in the pool. So the final ride is tomorrow for four hours to home. Here are some pictures from the campground.

The Trip to Wisconsin starts with a plan for three stops on the way there. Gone are the days of cruising non-stop to our destination. Years ago, when the kids were young my daughter Jennifer would always want me to pull an “all nighter” so we could get to our destination or back home fast.

Checotah/Lake Eafaula KOA

As the kids, and I, got older I really had less of a stomach for that kind of driving. Then we got our floor children, the dogs (or as we referred to them; “the girls”). Driving for long stretches with multiple dogs is not easy. You need to worry about their comfort and schedule their potty and water/food breaks. Ever try to get two German shepherds out of a truck at a wayside? Both want to be first and both want to be next to each other…it can be a circus.

The longest I wanted to drive with the girls was really 8 hours and that was pushing it. This would require at least four potty and water breaks. Then at each has station we would see if they needed a drink etc.. all of that adds a lot of time to the trip. Then once we hit the campground the circus began again but it was not as wild because the girls knew they were finally out of the truck and could go in the travel trailer.

Now we have Eva, and she is harder to deal with because she still has a lot of puppy in her. While the truck is cruising down the highway all is well. The minute we stop for gas she starts barking. When we check in at the campground she barks. When she sees other people at their camper she barks. So we still have a lot of puppy stuff to work through, and we will get there.

I would like to say the first day of travel was uneventful, but that would be a lie. We had a really strange thing happen in Oklahoma where a gust of wind came up from a ravine and hit us so hard it actually rocked the trailer back and forth pretty violently. When it first hit the windshield we thought it was a swarm of bugs because we saw dark flecks hitting the windshield. Then the trailer started rocking and thankfully it didn’t flip. I think a fast moving train going the opposite direction generated the wind, but this is just a guess because a mile later I saw a train track on that side of the road and it was the only rational explanation I could come up with.

Our first campground stop was the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA in Oklahoma. It’s a very short 4 hour drive from our house.

You have heard me critique the KOA chain before but I always point out the good KOA campgrounds. The Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA is a very nice quiet KOA. Even Eva seemed to enjoy the animals that reside on the property. Tammy and I always say we will come back for a longer stay and I want that to happen.

Luckily for us Eva was happy doing her business at the KOA, so we all felt good about that.

Eva settles in to our usual routine, and goes to bed in her crate with little complaining…but day 2 is coming! The next stop will be a KOA in Missouri, one we have never stayed in. The trip to Wisconsin Continues.

It was so good to get out of the Springfield/Route 66 KOA early. I think we both breathed a sigh of relief as the girls climbed into the back of the truck without any barking coming from the site across from us. It was finally time to head towards the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA in Oklahoma.

Lake Eufaula KOA Campground MAP

It is 210 miles or about three and a half hours from the Springfield KOA to the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA. That’s a nice short run to make in the summer heat. We have never stayed at the Checotah KOA, and I have to say it exceeded our expectations. It’s what you expect when you pull into a campground. It’s immaculate, the grounds are well maintained and the trailers, even if they are seasonal, are neat and picked up. It is also is very quiet and there is decent spacing between the trailers which have nice grassy sites. It’s a smaller KOA as you can see from their map, and it wasn’t full, which made it even nicer. There is something very nice about staying in a smaller campground. It is so much nicer than being jammed together in a large campground where the amenities can’t keep up with the population.

The icing on the cake here in the Lake Eufaula KOA is that they actually have their own little restaurant, the “Chuckwagon Café”, inside their main office building. They serve Breakfast and Dinner only – from April through October.

I have to say, this KOA may be one of Oklahoma’s best kept secrets. Tammy always says that she can “count on one hand the number of good KOAs that we have stayed at”, well this is one of them.

Just look at the playground in the picture above. Plenty of shade so your kids don’t need to be playing out in the hot Oklahoma sun. Needless to say the playground is as clean as the rest of this KOA.

The photo of our travel trailer above shows just how nice the camping spots are at this KOA.

Now I have to admit that I would hate to drive a lot of traffic to the Lake Eufaula KOA. My motive is selfish, I would not want to go there and see that it had changed to a bad KOA. However, these folks seem to know what’s important in a campground so my hope is that it will always be this nice.

So if you are looking for a secluded and quiet get-a-way, this place is for you. I could easily spend a week here doing absolutely nothing.
