I still remember the first time I lifted up the 50 Amp cord to our new travel trailer back in 2017. There were two things really surprised me. One, the cord was much heavier than I anticipated and two; it was very hard to coil it and store it neatly in the storage area of the trailer. It was a heavy bulky mess!

For those folks that have the 50 amp cord, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Things are much easier with a 30 amp cord. 30 amp cords are lighter and much more flexible. With a 30amp cord you can easily wipe it off as you coil it. Coiling is not so easy with the 50 amp cord. In fact many 30 amp cords are hardwired and they pull directly out of a self storage area on the side of the travel trailer. When you are done camping the cord just gets fed back into that storage area – simple!

If you look for solutions on-line for handling the 50 Amp cord you will probably read about folks coiling the cord in an egg crate; and then lifting it into the trailers storage area. Other solutions have been to coil the cord in a five gallon pail. While still other RV Owners have opted for buying a water hose reel and try to make that work.

The long and short of home made solutions is that the 50 Amp Cord still needs to be manhandled in order to be stowed.

There is a great solution from MORryde. It is called the “Easy Reel Spooler” which takes the struggle out of fighting with this heavy unruly cord.

MORryde has several different models including an economy model and a motorized version. Then they also have the model we chose which is a tall enclosed spooler. It has a hand crank which works for left or right hand operation. The tall model will store up to 50 feet of either 30 or 50 amp cord.

Keep in mind the spooler will not work if your cord is hardwired inside your travel trailer; (where you push the cord manually through the side of the trailer). If however, your 30 amp cord is hardwired and just coiled up inside of the main storage area you can still use the Easy Spooler but the process of using it will be slightly different. In that scenario the pedestal plug end will first be inserted into the Spooler vs. the trailer plug end on a non-hardwired cord.

Installation is as easy as four screws into the floor to hold the unit safely in place. If you don’t want to screw into the floor of your storage area, you can mount the unit on a separate piece of plywood and then place the assembly inside the storage area. The unit weighs close to thirty pounds. It is not something you want freestanding as you go down the road.

Now here is one of the nicest advantages of spooling the 50 amp cord. As you crank the cord you can use your free hand to wipe the cord off as it winds up. Manually wiping the 50ampcord has always been a pain for me, not anymore.

I cant wait to start using the MORryde easy spooler. I know its going to save me a bunch of time when I break down camp, and it will be so much easier than man handling that 50 amp cord. In addition, right after I bought the Easy Spooler, Eva (Our Shepherd) knocked me off my feet and I have a rotator cuff injury, so there is no way I would be able to deal with the 50 AMP cord without this device.
