As I’ve mentioned before, we were never looking for an outside kitchen when we stumbled onto the Jayco 29RBOK. We felt we would never use it. That was a mistake on our part. Now its the biggest thing, and perhaps the only thing, we miss after moving to our Imagine travel trailer.
That being said I have added a small fridge up in the front storage compartment. Now the only thing we are really missing of any substance is the two burner cook top. I have already made up my mind that if this becomes too much of an issue we will just buy a decent electric frying pan. So far, though, just having the bumper grill and the mini fridge available outside has been all that we need.
The two burner cook top was nice because it was quick to set up and easy to clean. Almost everyone that has had a bumper or RV grill knows that this is just not the case when you use your grill. The grease drips down into god forsaken places that you can’t reach unless your willing to get stitches at an urgent care. So what I have done is to line the inside of the grill with tin foil. This is good for about four days of grilling before it needs to be replaced. The tin foil along with simple green (foaming cleaner) has made cleaning the grill a lot less dreadful. No one who travels with an RV grill likes to clean it, or travel with it dirty.
Our next trip is a Thanksgiving get away in south Texas. We have been trying to figure out the best way to cook the turkey. I suggested we try just a turkey breast on the grill in a shallow pan. We decided that we should do a trial run before we head out; just to make sure it was a feasible option. The advantage of roasting it on the grill would be that the smells could stay outside the trailer, and we wouldn’t need to heat up the oven.
The RVQ Grill we own doesn’t come with a built in thermometer so I purchased a hand held digital model. I can easily slide the thermometer in the grills vent and get a reading on the overall temperature of the closed grill. After some adjustments over a 30 minute period I had the grill tuned in to 350 degrees. I followed the per pound directions and we made some side dishes in the house. I have to say I was really impressed with how well the turkey turned out. Since the turkey was in a small baking pan it made absolutely no mess at all. It may not be as easy as “set it and forget it” but it was pretty easy!
This proves that you don’t need a top of the line grill to do some decent cooking at your campsite – you can even do a turkey dinner if you desire. I’m looking forward to replicating this in a little over a week….maybe even warm up some pie in there …who knows! You can get inventive with your grill!
