This class action lawsuit is brought forward by Wietz and Luxenberg on behalf of Grand Design owners with frame flex issues. The class action lawsuit refers to specific defective Grand Design RV models sold between 2020 and 2023 including the Reflection, Influence, Solitude, and Momentum products.
Remember that in addition to this, that there is an active investigation going on right now with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the same issue.
There are many claims in the lawsuit, so I thought I’d break down the particulars. Remember these are the plaintiffs’ claims only, Grand Design and Winnebago have not had their day in court yet.
- The company knew the RVs were defective but marketed them aggressively anyway.
2) The Grand Design Warranties were largely worthless due to red tape restrictions making it difficult to get repairs. If you couldn’t tow your own unit to Grand Design in Indiana for repairs, it prevented you from being able to use the warranty.
3)The frame that was designed and installed on model years 2020-2023 Grand Design RVs were defective. They were not sufficiently capable of tolerating the weight and stress of typical RV use. This diminished the value of each RV it sold by at least tens of thousands of dollars. It often rendering the RVs unusable and and/or uninhabitable.”
4) The defendants did not fix the problem. They continued selling and didn’t issue a recall. In addition, they initiated a cover up. They didn’t protect their customers, instead prioritized profit.
5) The defendants participated in misleading, false, or deceptive acts that violated” state laws. “By systematically concealing the frame defect in Grand Design RVs, Defendants engaged in deceptive business practices.”
6) The defendants are liable for “consumer fraud and false advertising, product defects, and violation of consumer protection statutes.”
7) Defects in the RV include the specific frame defect and the defective processes used to build the RVs. The process “included cost-cutting, minimizing the importance of safety issues, the failure to follow acceptable manufacturing processes and to design RV frames that were fit for purpose.”
So, that is the summary of the Class Action Claims. I have read a longer legal document that goes into much more detail. However, this gives you an overview of what’s going on.
- It’s also interesting to note that the stock is down significantly in 2025.
- Winnebago Industries reduced its fiscal 2025 revenue forecast to $2.8 billion to $3.0 billion from a previous range of $2.9 billion to $3.2 billion.
In their recent earnings call it looks like they are attributing the reduction in earnings to folks buying lower cost RVs and the large decline of motorhome sales. There may be some truth to that, as the motorhome sales across the industry are down double digit. There was nothing in the earnings call about the class action lawsuit, which I think you would expect.
Can Grand Design and Winnebago somehow climb out of this mess that Grand Design created with their frame flex issues? Or has their reputation been tarnished to a degree where they won’t be able to recover. Let me know your thoughts.
For the folks that are going through this personal nightmare with their rigs, I am hoping you are made whole soon.
