There is a reason that this movie is popular among those of us that have travel trailers; it’s because there are many parts that travel trailer owners can identify with. So, if you are trapped inside your stick and brick house this winter, you can avoid cabin fever with this movie.
This great movie was made released in February of 1954. The travel trailer used in the film is a 1953 Redman “New Moon”, which was 36 feel long. In 1953 this trailer sold for a little over five thousand dollars, which doesn’t seem like much; but in todays currency that would be over fifty thousand dollars. So it’s a pretty upscale camper, and you get a real flavor for that when you see the inside.
Even by todays standards, this is a beautiful trailer. However, there is much more to the movie than just a couple of newlyweds traveling across the county together. It is the story of how two people cope with traveling and living in a travel trailer while they make their way from California to Colorado.
Without giving too much of the plot away, here is a brief synopsis: Tacy (Lucille Ball) convinces her fiance Nicky (Desi Arnaz) that buying the travel trailer will be cheaper in the long run, than renting a house wherever his engineering jobs take them. Reluctantly, he agrees and they make the purchase. Shortly thereafter they are married and their journey begins, and so does your as you watch.
I think what is most endearing about this movie is the love of the two characters for each other; and Tacys’ love of the New Moon Travel Trailer. As Nicky says at one point when Tacy refuses to sell the trailer, “Now at least I know where I stand”.
I don’t think that there is a travel trailer owner on the planet that won’t be able to identify with at least three or four of the situations that Tacy and Nicky find themselves in during their trip.
We have watched this movie many times and I am still finding new things every time. Do yourself a favor and rent or buy this movie, you wont regret it; and it will get you out of the winter blues and thinking about your next adventure.
