If you are looking for an alternative to the typical RV grill the Blackstone Griddle may just the ticket.
You may have read my post regarding “Getting Creative with your Grill”. Well here is another way to cook food quickly and with very little clean up time. It’s the Blackstone Griddle.
This is becoming a very popular item with campers. It comes in a variety of different sizes, the 17″ seems to be the most common size purchased by Travel Trailer Owners. I was given the 22″ Griddle by my Daughter. They have even larger units available if you are thinking about getting rid of your large gas grill at home and moving to this type of cooking.
Blackstone also has a number of accessories you can purchase for your griddle. Everything from utensils, grill covers, floor mats, and clothing are available to Blackstone Owners.
So what makes this such a great alternative to carrying a grill? Well to begin with it is just a lot easier to clean. The cooking surface is made of cast iron. So when you are done cooking on it, you simply throw some water on the griddle, scrape it with a spatula and wipe it clean. There is a little pan that sits on the back of the griddle that will catch the grease as you cook.
Now, one thing you will notice about this griddle is that it is quite heavy, however I think the versatility of it makes up for the added weight. If you decide to travel with this griddle you will almost certainly want to purchase a carrying bag for it. While the 22″ model did not have a bag last summer, they are selling a bag now that will hold the grill, and stand (if you chose to buy a stand).
The stand has adjustable legs that fold for storage. It fits both the 17″ and 22″ model. This beats placing the griddle on a picnic table or worse yet, the ground. The adjustable legs allow you to level the grill for cooking.
Also, unless you are planning on buying a lot of small gas bottles to power the griddle, you will want to purchase an adapter so you can run it directly off a propane line on your travel trailer. I believe that Blackstone only recommends running their griddles with the small gas bottle or hooked directly to a propane tank, however, almost everyone is adapting their griddle to a propane hook-up. Click here to view the adapter I purchased recently; it works great.
We have been using ours for about six months now, and we like it so much I keep it on my patio so I can use it when we are not camping. The Blackstone doesn’t take up much space; and I purchased a cover for it so it will stay clean when it’s outside when camping or on the patio.
II prefer to grill my steak but thought I would try a few on the Blackstone; they turned out great. I also cooked eggs over easy on the griddle with no problem, as well as hash-browns, bacon, pancakes etc.
So it seems you can cook anything on this griddle; so if you want to get rid of your grill you will be just fine switching to the Blackstone. Best of all you can keep all the cooking smells out of the trailer.
Now just a few words of caution: You will need to season the griddle before you can use it. You will also need to wipe it down with oil after you use it so it doesn’t rust. The Owners Manual will cover all of these steps. Also, this unit gets very hot. So please find a safe area when you use it so your pets or small children can’t get near it.
If you have problems with your Blackstone, don’t worry, you can call their customer support number and get the help you need.
For now, I’ll travel with both my little RVQ grill and the Blackstone. However when the RVQ dies, I don’t see any reason to replace it now that I have the Blackstone Griddle.
