It was so good to get out of the Springfield/Route 66 KOA early.  I think we both breathed a sigh of relief as the girls climbed into the back of the truck without any barking coming from the site across from us.  It was finally time to head towards the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA in Oklahoma.

It is 210 miles or about three and a half hours from the Springfield KOA to the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA.  That’s a nice short run to make in the summer heat.  We have never stayed at the Checotah KOA, and I have to say it exceeded our expectations.  It’s what you expect when you pull into a campground. It’s immaculate, the grounds are well maintained and the trailers, even if they are seasonal, are neat and picked up.  It is also is very quiet and there is decent spacing between the trailers which have nice grassy sites.  It’s a smaller KOA as you can see from their map, and it wasn’t full, which made it even nicer.  There is something very nice about staying in a smaller campground.  It is so much nicer than being jammed together in a large campground where the amenities can’t keep up with the population.

The icing on the cake here in the Lake Eufaula KOA is that they actually have their own little restaurant, the “Chuckwagon Café”, inside their main office building.  They serve Breakfast and Dinner only – from April through October.

I have to say, this KOA may be one of Oklahoma’s best kept secrets.  Tammy always says that she can “count on one hand the number of good KOAs that we have stayed at”, well this is one of them.

The Playground, really nice and shady!

The Playground, really nice and shady!

Just look at the playground in the picture above.  Plenty of shade so your kids don’t need to be playing out in the hot Oklahoma sun.  Needless to say the playground is as clean as the rest of this KOA.

The photo of our travel trailer above shows just how nice the camping spots are at this KOA.

Now I have to admit that I would hate to drive a lot of traffic to the Lake Eufaula KOA.  My motive is selfish, I would not want to go there and see that it had changed to a bad KOA.  However, these folks seem to know what’s important in a campground so my hope is that it will always be this nice.

So if you are looking for a secluded and quiet get-a-way, this place is for you.  I could easily spend a week here doing absolutely nothing.
