If you have looked closely at our site, you can probably see that we own an Imagine Travel Trailer by Grand Design. Specifically we own the 2017 2950RL model. We saw this model the RV show last year and decided we just couldn’t pass up moving to this floor plan. No one who buys a new travel trailer expects that there will be a recall on their unit. Since we purchased this Trailer there have been 3 national recalls.
The first recall revolved around the Schwintek Slides (we have two). Apparently the walls needed Z clips installed and larger diameter screws all around the outside of the exterior flange in order to keep the slide-outs from falling out of the trailers. Many screws were shearing off around the outer flange. Our trailer only had one sheared screw thankfully and the repairs were completed quickly so there was no interruption to our camping plans.
The second recall was to replace incorrect wire nuts that had been used in the air conditioners. This was in response to a fire that had taken place on one of the trailers. In addition I saw many pictures on-line of burnt wire nuts that owners had decided to replace themselves. Let me just state for the record; I think replacing anything yourself that is covered under a recall is not smart. You will probably void your warranty. In addition, there will be no record in the Dealers system that the issue has been fixed. Finally, how do you know you are fixing it as intended by the manufacturer? Again, this was a really quick fix that our dealer did for us in about an hour.
The most recent recall revolves around Lippert Industries Smart Jack. Our jack had already been replaced by the factory when we were on our vacation, because it was unreliable. For all the nifty little things Lippert claimed this power jack could do, you had to have a photographic memory to remember how to utilize them. Beyond that, the most basic functions of the jack, raising and lowering the travel trailer, were terrible. I always had to coax the jack to work by pressing the buttons multiple times. Thankfully Grand Design replaced my jack with a newer two switch model. This jack works as intended; no bells or whistles, just reliable operation.
I hate to say it Lippert, but Tammy and I saw this recall coming months ago. Simple is always better!
