On a recent trip to Wisconsin we had the opportunity to travel to the Wisconsin Dells area.  The “Dells” is about 45 minutes from the City of Madison, where Tammy and I lived for many years.  Madison alone has a lot to offer, but for a great weekend escape you just a short drive from the Wisconsin Dells.

One of our favorite camping spots was “Stand-Rock Campground”.   When we discovered this campground it was a family owned and operated.   I believe it still is.  The sites for travel trailers are large and equipped with full hook ups.  We preferred to stay in the furthest back part of the campground where a loop existed; campsites were located on the outside of the loop as well as the inside. We became such regulars that anytime we would call to ask if our favorite spot was available, they knew it was us.  Though the site was not a pull through, it was easy enough to back into, and the trees really gave you a sense of privacy. All in all a great campground, very clean, great sites, five minutes to the Dells and close to home.

The outside of our loop consisted of many seasonal campers, but you would not have known that by looking at the sites.  These folks took great care of their trailers and sites.  There was never any miscellaneous camping gear piled up outside  Nothing on the sites  gave the appearance of long term camping.  In fact, they actually had a contest for the seasonal campers based on who had the nicest site.

StandRock Campground – beautiful sites!

Year after year this was the place we took our kids for weekend camping.  Although the trailers changed over the years, the activities remained the same; water parks, downtown shops, mini golf, and hanging out at camp in front of the campfire.

I always had the kids on a mission to find sticks and branches for the fire, and with as wooded as the sites were, this was really no problem at all.

I highly recommend spending time in the Dells if your in Wisconsin.  If for no other reason just to see what a city, that is basically an amusement park,  looks like.  You wont run out of things to do.  If your into Bicycling there are some really nice State Bicycle Trails nearby as well.

There are other campgrounds in and around the Dells but this is the one we always chose.  I have no feedback on the others campgrounds because we started here and were happy.  As a result we never checked any of the others out.  Things may have changed since our last visit so I would recommend reading current reviews before booking a reservation.
